TOE Short Story :: A Summer to Remember [Ghost Story] – Chap 6

by Kirsten (age 13)

excitementChapter 6

I woke up from my Mom’s voice.

“Wake up, sweetie,” she said. “We have to leave to get Emma in a half hour.”

I rubbed my eyes and sat up.

“Be downstairs in thirty minutes,” Mom said before leaving to wake Matthew up.

I jumped into the shower and brushed my teeth.

After, I changed into a blue t-shirt and some jeans.

It would be cold on the airplane, so I added a gray sweater.

I ran a comb through my hair and pulled my heavy luggage down the stairs.

Matthew was already down there, half asleep.

Mom handed us Hot Pockets and helped us get our luggage in the car.

Dad came down and helped, too.

Matthew and I got into the backseat while Mom and Dad got into the front.

I was so tired, but the excitement woke me up.

“I’m so excited!” I said enthusiastically.

Matthew nibbled on his Hot Pocket and stared out the window.

We started driving. It had passed 15 minutes and we pulled in front of a small, cozy little house.

A girl whom I recognized as Emma walked out of the house with a suitcase and two bags.

Dad got out of the car to help her with her luggage.

Emma gave me a bad look as she got into the car with Matthew.

Matthew and Emma sneaked a kiss and started chatting.

I knew that the airport was about an hour away, so I’d be here for a while.

I took out my book from my carry-on bag.

I pulled open to the part where I’d last left off and started reading.

Finally, the waiter came back with our food and drinks.

“Sorry for the long wait, Ma’am,” Jacob apologized to Mom.

“It’s fine,” Mom replied.

When my plate was passed to me, all I could do was stare at it.

Peppers and onions were gathered at the top, hiding the lettuce. “What is this?” I asked.

I looked up but the waiter had already left.

“It’s salad, honey,” Mom answered instead. “Just pick out the stuff you don’t like.”

I unfolded my napkin and spooned out the red peppers, then the onions onto it.

A layer of mushrooms appeared. I spooned those out as well until I finally had a proper bowl of croutons, lettuce, tomatoes, and caesar salad dressing.

I crumbled the napkin up, smashing the yucky peppers, onions, and mushrooms with it.

I started eating and sipped my water to wash it down.

“Did you see if Emma was able to go yet?” Mom asked Matthew.

“No. I am going to call her once we get home,” he replied, stuffing his face with taquitos.

After that, there wasn’t much talking.

Once I was done with my salad, I looked up. It seemed like everybody had been finished for a while now.

“Are we all finished?” Dad looked around.

We all nodded.

The waiter, Jacob, came by and took our plates.

“Your check will be here in a minute,” he said, scurrying away with the dishes.

I checked the watch on my wrist and it read, “7:45.”

Jacob came back with our check and we were off.

The rest of the school day passed by quickly.

I was waiting in sixth hour for the bell to ring.

We had just finished stacking our chairs and were waiting by the door for the bell.

“So, what are you doing this summer?” my friend, Gabe, asked me.

“I’m going to Michigan to see my cousin,” I replied.

“Oh, that sounds fun. People call it “The Land Of the Ghosts,” he said.

“Why?”

“I don’t know. I guess a lot of ghosts are there.”

I laughed. “I don’t believe in ghosts.”

“Well, don’t come crying to me when you find one.” Gabe laughed with me.

Boo.
