Flash Fiction Friday :: Small Talk

Allen Butler

“Good morning!”

“Mornin’.”

“How ya doing today?”

“Fine.”

“Good! Good.”

“Yeah.”

“So you see the game last night?”

“No.”

“Oh, well it was a good one. You missed a good game.”

“I’m sure.”

“So what you do last night, if you weren’t watching the game?”

“Nothing.”

“Oh, well, nothing can be fun sometimes. I like to do nothing sometimes. Good for the soul.”

“Yeah.”

“Got any plans for the weekend?”

“Not really.”

“Nothing wrong with that! Nothing at all. Me, I’m heading down to the beach with the family. Planning on having a real good time. It’s been ages since we’ve been to the beach. I’ve been waiting a long time for summer. Gonna get me some sun, play a little beach volleyball, swim in the ocean again. The kids are really looking forward to it.”

“I’m sure.”

“Just wish we had more time. Feels like forever since we’ve had a real vacation. I don’t think I’ve had a vacation more than just a three-day weekend in, God, four years now.”

“Wow.”

“I know! Hey, what time is it, anyway?”

“8:32”

“Oh, well, I better get going. Talk to you later!”

“Later.”
