Erosion

Al Billings

Erosion barriers, rough, scratchy fabric held erect by wire fencing, meant to staunch the flow of water through someone else’s property. But in these images, it looks as though the men who both installed and removed it backhandedly created abstract sculpture simply by twisting the barrier into clumps that could be hauled away to the landfill. The shapes are filled with marvelous tension. Without it there is only decoration. Signs and symbols everywhere, hidden in the dry grass on an ugly hillside in Austin, Texas.
