TOE Exclusive :: Tin Salamunic Interview

herocious

My memory of early drawing goes back as far as any of my memories of my first toys…

Where were you born and where do you live now?

I was born in Banja Luka, Bosnia, moved to Muenster, Germany because of the civil war, and found myself migrating to Richmond, VA with my family in early 1998 where I still reside.

Tell us about your education.

I went to Douglas Southall Freeman high school and proceeded to receive my BFA from the Comunication Arts Department at the Virginia Commonwelath University (VCU) where I also currently teach.

What is the one book you will regret never having read?

That’s a tough one because I am a book worm and read whatever interests me. At this point, any intriguing Philosophy book unread is regretful.

What is your favorite ingredient?

Fish sauce

How did you get interested in art?

My memory of early drawing goes back as far as any of my memories of my first toys, so I’d have to say that my interest in art has developed around the same time that I found myself watching the early He-man, Ninja Turtles, and transformers cartoons. :)

How has your practice evolved over the course of time?

My obsessive tendency of sketchbooking each day has lead to a daily visual recording of my life. My focus on abstraction rather than realism has matured over the past few years and I find myself viewing the world as a never-ending contour line drawing that I try to record on the pages of my sketchbooks.

What do you consider to be your greatest success?

Finding pure joy and appreciation for what I do. I am truly grateful to say that I love my job and that it is the first thing crossing my mind when waking up in the morning.

If you could ask yourself one question, what would it be and how would you answer?

I think asking myself questions is what has been holding me back in most cases. We, as artists, or human beings in general, have a tendency to raise more questions prior to finding any answers which leads us to years of confusion and our sense of success diminishes by urging to compare ourselves to others, instead of focusing on what we really want.
