Then I’d go with you.
That’s what he said to me, his girlfriend of more than two years. We were talking what ifs. What if this country had a draft? That’s what I asked him.
“Shit,” he said, “I don’t know.”
“If this country had a draft,” I rejoined, “I’d have to leave. I’d have to go to Canada.”
“Then I’d go with you.”
Although simple and thoughtless, there was love in what he said to me, a loving camaraderie, which is everything you can hope to have in your partner.
Be my loving comrade. Come with me wherever I go and love me.
