The Ringing

High-pitched ringing
that keeps getting higher.
We woke up with it.
The ringing started
before our alarm.
Our ears heard it first.
Inner tubing its way
into our brains.
It gets higher then higher
then even higher.
Then it cuts off.
Then it cuts on,
higher.
We woke up listening to
the ringing
that comes from
the pipes
inside our thin walls.
