Federal Excise Taxes on Tobacco are Increasing

federal excise taxes on tobacco

On February 4th, 2009, the Federal Government enacted legislation to fund the expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) that increased excise taxes on tobacco by:

158% on cigarettes
158% on smokeless tobacco
155% on large cigars

I remember this was big news on NPR. Some highly-qualified guests they interviewed even had great expectations. Have these increases gotten any smokers to quit? Or, at the very least, cut back?

Or, is smoking still worth it?
